More on Jade Quote: "In 1863, a French mineralogist, Alexis Damour, analyzed the bright green stones from Burma. Finding them different from ordinary Chinese jade (nephrite), he named the ?new? jade, jadeite.
Jadeite and Nephrite are both comprised of tightly interlocking crystals, which is different from the single crystals that comprise most other gems.

Real Solid Nephrite Jade and Jadeite of high quality stone can also be found here on our websites.
The term "jade" and the Chinese term "yu" literaly meaning Jade are often used to designate a variety of stones and glossy materials. Their use should, however, be limited to jadeite and nephrite. Nephrite belongs to the amphibole group of minerals and is a silicate of calcium and magnesium. Its crystalline structure has the appearance of hair-like fibers welded together to form a closely integrated mass, and it is this which gives it its strength. Nephrite ranks as 6.5 on the Moh scale of hardness. Nephrite has been worked in China since the Neolithic period.
The Chinese have been working Dushan jade for 6000 years and in Imperial burial tombs have found complete body coverings in jade tiles stitiched with fine gold thread.
A search on the internet will yield many articles and some scepticism as well as always. But to the Chinese this is a historical long loved stone called Dushan Yu and will be for probably as long in the future as it has in the past.
Recently in early 2007 the chinese government has ordered the Dushan mtn. mines closed to all but 1 government operated facility as it is in very short supply to save this heritage.
Look to the future of Dushan Jade going sky high in prices and should be a very good investment if you can find them in the future.
Much of the nephrite used in China comes from all over China, including Hetian, Dushan, Kunlun, Lantian, and some lesser stone in Khotan and Guangdong and even Taiwan.
jade comes in many colors also other than green and some times the Chinese government can date a piece from the stone color as they know what period of time this stone ran out. We have seen even Pink Jade colors which could be the reference sometimes associating Dushan jade to Zoisite, bright lemon yellow on rare occasion and the last couple years some in Pink Jade, but it is very rare and we have not seen any more for over a year. The translucent emerald green color is the most expensive and highly regarded. White and brown and dark and light greens and greys are also common. Pure White "Mutton Fat Jade" is also well prized so Dushan jade in pure white is very well loved. Since the stone has been depleted especially now days since they find few new deposits stone is hard to come by to the carvers and many have had to move on to other jobs to feed their families.
Some lesser quality stone called "Dushan Chime", or (Saussurite), is used for construction purposes such as flooring and cheap carvings.
Jade is not the only stone carvered by these artists. An agate in China is called Manao which seems to come in a variaty of colors. We have seen carved Manao geodes in Henan that actually had water trapped inside they carved around from who knows when it was made. We will put some of the Du Shan Mountain jade for sale on the website for you to see.
We offer many natural jade carvings and also some more affordable jade flowers.
In 2005 we had the pleasure to walk part of Dushan mountain and were given a rough stone seen Here.
These flowers have a clear coating to protect them so they do not loose this coloring.
Many of our carvings are natural and no color added.
You must take care buying Jade. Some try to fool you in accepting high priced dyed jade. And pass it off as natural at a high price. Thus our prices are reflecting this. If you ask we will let you know if it is true color if we have that information.
Early Jade Carving is found in China in the north-east in the Xinglongwa (about 5000 BC) and Chahai cultures (about 4500 BC), which preceded the Hongshan (about 3800-2700 BC).
Burma Jade:
A French chemist, Augustine Damour, noted in 1863 that jade was two different minerals. She used the word "Jadeite" for Burmese jade to distinguish it from the Chinese jade "nephrite." The Chinese had know of the difference between the two since the early seventeen hundreds.
Today, gemologists apply the term jade only to nephrite and jadeite. Nephrite is a fibrous subspecies of the actinolite ?tremolite series, while jadeite is a member of the pyroxene mineral group. The ideal composition of jadeite is [NaAl(SiO3)2], but it is frequently mixed with diopside [CaMg(SiO3)2] or acmite [NaFe(SiO3)2]. Jadeite rich in iron (mixed with acmite) is a dark green to black color and is termed chloromelanite. Some boulders display this black, chloromelanite skin, which, according to Burmese miners, is bad, ?infecting? the stone, and a harbinger of bad luck." End Quote
Jadeite is a little bit harder and denser and can take more time to polish. It is comprised of crystals which tend to be somewhat more granular and coarse.
Nephrite is most common and typically found in several colors not only olive or forest green. The oldest known sources come from China. It is slightly stronger since it's crystal components are more intergrown than Jadeite.
VARIETY OF: both Jadeite and Nephrite
USES: Gemstone and ornamental stone.
COLOR: shades of emerald green as well as white, gray, yellow, orange and violet.
INDEX OF REFRACTION: is approximately 1.66 (jadeite) and 1.62 (nephrite)
HARDNESS: 6.5 - 7
CLEAVAGE: does not apply due to massive nature of jade
CRYSTAL SYSTEM: monoclinic
I am often asked what is the difference between jadeite and Nephrite Jade.
Not being a gemologist myself I can only go by experience.
To me the neprite jade is like the Dushan and Canada jades. The jadeite is more like the Burmese jade which seens very translucent at times. In fact to test the quality of a stone a carver will hold a bright LED light to the stone to see how much it lights up.
For us loving the art, be it jade, jadeite, nephrite, or a old piece of wood with fine artwork. This is where the value is.
And to the Chinese this Dushan jade as well as others are deeply loved and is and will be part of their culture.
I once heared, Gold has it's set price, But jade is priceless! ... Enjoy the art...
